What to expect

From consultation to final result

The stages below are typical for this procedure. Your own timeline is confirmed at the consultation.

Tap to flip

The result

How long it lasts

The scar sits in the natural crease of the eyelid, which is why it is difficult to see once it has settled. Results from this procedure are long-lasting, though the eyelid continues to age as the rest of the face does.

Cost

Quoted in writing

Cost is one of the main reasons people wait. We would rather be plain about it. Fees are quoted at the consultation, once Dr. Tumi has assessed which procedure you actually need. The office procedure is priced differently from a full blepharoplasty.

Dr. Kamal Tumi, plastic surgeon, Barrie Plastic Surgery

Who performs it

Assessed and performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon

Upper eyelid skin tightening removes the loose skin that gathers above the lash line. That skin stretches as the lid loses its elasticity. It is one of the most frequently performed procedures at Barrie Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Kamal Tumi performs it in our office under local anesthetic rather than in an operating room.

Dr. Kamal Tumi, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C), is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a specialist in plastic surgery. He completed his specialist training at McMaster University and a plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto. More than 28 years in practice, over 3,500 surgeries performed.

Consultant plastic surgeon at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie since 2004. A hospital appointment means credentials reviewed by peers and the ability to manage complications directly.

You will not meet one person at the consultation and find someone else in the room. In his own words: "I will not do a surgery on you if you do not need it."

What patients say

I had my first consultation with Dr. Tumi, and he was beyond fabulous. From the jump, he shook my hand and introduced himself to my daughter and I. He included her in the conversation and even had some laughs with her. This made the situation alot less vulnerable given the reason I was there. He is the second surgeon that I have met with, and wasn't going to be my last, until I decided he was the last. It is because of his honesty, integrity, authenticity and professionalism, that made my choice. I saw some comments in the reviews where people stated he made them feel uncomfortable while getting undressed and for me that did not happen. He was respectful of my space and was sure I was covered appropriately. I went to see him for a breat augmentation and Dr. Tumi did not think an augmentation would be required. I really appreciated that about him, because the first surgeon I met, insisted this procedure, despite me only wanting a lift with fat transfer. This is a huge cost savings for me, and more natural for my body type, and in my opinion. Dr. Tumi did not make me feel rushed with any questions and time was not ever an issue for him. He wanted to be sure I knew all that I needed. His office manager Karyn, was absolutely wonderful and easy to connect with. She took her time to discuss things that I did not think of and even called me over the weekend when I emailed her some more questions. This is above and beyond care. My surgery is April 20th and I know I am in good hands. I will follow this up with further reviews in the future and have no doubt it will be 5 stars across the board. One last thing... of all the reviews, I paid attention to the ones where the patients actually had surgery, not the ones who were disgruntled about the office staff or OHIP issues. After all, it is the surgeon we want precision with, isn't it? Thanks Karyn and Dr. Tumi, for making me comfortable and content.

Upper Eyelid Skin Tightening, start to finish

What upper eyelid skin tightening involves at each stage, from the first consultation through to the result.

Step 01 · Consultation

The consultation

Patients usually come for one of two reasons. Either the skin has begun to sit on the lashes and get in the way of what they can see, or they are tired of looking tired. Both are reasonable reasons to ask.

  • Assessment of what is actually causing what you see

Frequently asked questions

Upper Eyelid Skin Tightening questions,

Typically under an hour for both lids. With the marking, the numbing and a short rest afterwards, plan on being in the office for about two hours.

This is the question we hear most, and for many people it is the thing that has held them back. No. Upper eyelid skin tightening is performed under local anesthetic in our office. You are awake, and the eyelid is numbed. There is no general anesthetic. This is the main practical difference between this procedure and a full blepharoplasty.

Sutures come out at five to seven days, and most people are back at desk work in about a week. Bruising is largely gone by two weeks, and exercise resumes once Dr. Tumi clears it at your follow-up.

The eyelid is numbed with local anesthetic before the procedure begins. The numbing itself stings for a few seconds. After that, most patients describe pressure and touch rather than pain. In the days afterwards the lids feel tight and gritty, and cold compresses with ordinary over-the-counter pain relief are usually all that is needed.

No. This is a day procedure in our office, and you go home the same day with someone to drive you.

Typically one to two weeks. It is most visible in the first few days and can usually be covered with makeup once the sutures are out.

The incision is placed in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Once healed it sits inside that fold, which is why it is difficult to see. Everyone scars differently, and Dr. Tumi will discuss your healing at the consultation.

The removed skin does not return. The eyelid continues to age with the rest of your face, so the change is long-lasting rather than permanent.

Where upper eyelid skin obstructs the field of vision, coverage is sometimes possible. This depends on assessment and documentation, and it is discussed at the consultation. Cosmetic upper eyelid surgery is not covered.

Upper eyelid skin tightening removes skin from the upper lid, in our office, under local anesthetic. Blepharoplasty is a more involved surgical procedure that can also address fat and the lower lids. Which one you need depends on the assessment. ---

Two different procedures are often given the same name, so it is worth separating them before you read further. Upper eyelid skin tightening removes skin only. It addresses the loose fold on the upper lid. It is performed in our office under local anesthetic, and there is no operating room and no general anesthetic involved. Blepharoplasty is the broader surgical procedure. It can involve removing or repositioning fat as well as skin, and it can address the lower lids.
