Stubborn Fat That Won't Shift
Stubborn Fat That Won't Shift
A pocket of fat that stays whatever you eat or however you train. It is usually the lower abdomen or the flanks, and sometimes the inner thighs or the fullness under the chin. Most people who ask about this are not overweight. They are fit, or close to it. One area ignores everything they do. For some it is the lower belly after children. For others it is the flanks that hang over a waistband. It can also be the inner thighs or the fullness under the chin. Willpower has nothing to do with it. Fat cells in these areas are the last ones the body draws on. The only way to change the shape is to remove some of them.

WHAT CAUSES IT
Why it happens
The reasons a pocket of fat will not shift, and why they matter for the choice of treatment. That is why the area is examined before anything is chosen. Two abdomens can look the same and have different causes, and the right treatment follows the cause.
01
Genetics decide where fat is stored
The abdomen, flanks, thighs and under the chin are the areas the body holds onto longest, and no diet targets one area over another.
02
Pregnancy and weight change reset the pattern
After children or a large weight loss, fat settles in new places and the skin over it may have loosened too.
03
Loose skin is masquerading as fat
A soft lower abdomen after pregnancy is often stretched skin and separated muscle rather than fat, which changes the treatment entirely.
WHAT ACTUALLY TREATS IT
What actually treats stubborn fat in Barrie
A pocket that will not shift has more than one possible cause, and what looks like fat is sometimes loose skin or separated muscle. Surgical and non-surgical routes are both offered here, and a pinch test at the consultation decides which one you are.

Liposuction
Removes a localized fat deposit on the flanks, abdomen, inner thighs, bra line or back that diet and exercise leave behind. Those fat cells are removed permanently.
A defined, firm pocket in skin that still springs back, in someone who wants it gone in one go. It is the most direct answer for a larger change. It is not the answer where the skin over the fat has loosened or the lower abdomen is separated muscle.
The fat is removed in one session through entry points a few millimeters long. Because the fat cells themselves are removed, most patients do not see that fat return at a stable weight.
Dr. Tumi performs the surgery. Most patients are back at desk work in three to seven days, wear a compression garment for four to six weeks, and see the final contour at three to six months.

CoolSculpting
Freezes and reduces a fat pocket without surgery. There is no anesthetic and no downtime.
A modest, well-defined pinchable bulge in someone who wants no downtime and no surgery. For a larger change, or for a pocket you want gone in a single session, liposuction is the route.
The pocket is frozen over one or two sessions per area. The body then clears the treated cells over a couple of months.
Delivered by the trained clinical team under Dr. Tumi's direction. The first change shows at about four weeks and the full result at two to three months per session.

Fat-Dissolving Injections (Belkyra)
Injections that dissolve the fat under the chin. It is the non-surgical route for that one area.
Fullness under the chin in someone who would rather have a series of injections than an operation. Neck liposuction is the surgical route for the same area.
The fat under the chin is dissolved over a series of injections rather than removed in one session. How many are needed is decided once the area has been examined.
Injectable treatment is performed by Dr. Tumi himself. It is given as a series, and the number of treatments for your case is confirmed at the consultation.

Neck Liposuction
Surgical removal of the fat under the chin. It takes the fat out in one session rather than over a series of treatments.
Fullness under the chin in someone who wants it addressed in one session rather than over a series of injections. Under the chin is one of the areas the body holds onto longest, and no diet targets it.
The fat under the chin is removed surgically through small entry points, the same way liposuction works elsewhere on the body. Because the fat cells themselves are removed, most patients do not see that fat return at a stable weight.
Dr. Tumi performs the surgery. Liposuction recovery is three to seven days to desk work with a compression garment for four to six weeks, and the final contour at three to six months. The timeline for your case is confirmed at the consultation.

Abdominoplasty
A tummy tuck. It removes skin as well as fat, and repairs separated abdominal muscles.
A soft lower abdomen where the skin over the fat has loosened, or where what looks like fat is actually stretched skin and separated muscle after pregnancy. Removing fat alone will not change that shape.
The loose skin is removed along with the fat, and the separated muscles are closed. That is why the pinch test at the consultation matters: it separates this case from the liposuction case.
Dr. Tumi performs the surgery. Most patients are back at desk work in two to three weeks and exercising at six, with the final shape at six to twelve months.
The consultation includes a pinch test of the skin, because a soft lower abdomen after pregnancy is often stretched skin and separated muscle rather than fat, which changes the treatment entirely.
No diet targets one area over another. The abdomen, flanks, thighs and under the chin are simply the last fat the body draws on.

What to expect
After liposuction, most patients are back at desk work in three to seven days. A compression garment is worn for four to six weeks. The final contour settles at three to six months. At a stable weight, most patients do not see the removed fat return. CoolSculpting shows its first change at about four weeks and the full result at two to three months per session. A tummy tuck is two to three weeks to desk work and six weeks to exercise, with the final shape at six to twelve months. The timeline for your case is confirmed at the consultation. Who provides your care
Surgeon-led care you can verify
You are assessed by Dr. Kamal Tumi, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C), a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 28 years in practice and over 3,500 surgeries performed, and a consultant plastic surgeon at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre since 2004. The surgeon who assesses you is the surgeon who operates. Injectable treatment is performed by Dr. Tumi himself. Non-surgical treatment is delivered by our trained clinical team under his direction, including Priscilla Carvalho, medical aesthetician, phlebotomist and skin therapist. Smoking materially affects healing for most procedures, which is why you will be asked about it. His CPSO registration is public and searchable.
“I will not do a surgery on you if you do not need it.”
An assessment and a conversation.
You do not need to arrive knowing which procedure you want. Describing what bothers you is enough. You are not committing to surgery by booking a consultation.
FAQ
About Barrie Plastic Surgery
Yes. He holds an M.D. and is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a specialist in plastic surgery. That certification separates a plastic surgeon from a physician who offers cosmetic treatment. He has been a consultant plastic surgeon at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre since 2004.
In everyday use they are used interchangeably, and both terms describe most of what we do. Strictly, plastic surgery is the recognized surgical specialty, which includes reconstructive work. Cosmetic surgery describes procedures done to change appearance. Dr. Tumi is qualified in the specialty.
It depends on the procedure. Some, including upper eyelid surgery, are done in our own office under local anesthetic. Larger procedures are booked in an operating room, and which setting applies to you is confirmed at your consultation.
Yes. Male patients are a normal part of the practice. Eyelid surgery and gynecomastia are the usual reasons, and skin procedures are common too. ---
Unit 24, 222 Mapleview Drive West in Barrie, just off Highway 400 at the Mapleview exit. Consultations, injectables and the office procedures happen here. Dr. Tumi performs facial, breast and body surgery. Skin procedures are part of the practice too: mole removal, skin cancer removal, scar revision. On the non-surgical side he injects the neuromodulators and fillers himself. Laser, CoolSculpting, Morpheus8 and skin treatments are delivered by the clinical team under his direction.
Yes, for anything surgical, and for most non-surgical treatment too. The consultation is an examination and a conversation. Dr. Tumi looks at what is actually causing what you see, tells you what can and cannot be changed, and gives you a written quote afterwards. You are not asked to decide on the day.
Dr. Tumi performs every surgery and every injection himself. The surgeon who assesses you is the surgeon who operates. Laser, CoolSculpting, Morpheus8 and skin treatments are delivered by the clinic's trained clinical staff, under his direction.
Yes. Cosmetic procedures are not covered by OHIP, and we work with three financing providers: Beautifi, Medicard and Credit Medical. Every quote is given in writing at the consultation, so you know the full figure before you decide anything.
Dr. Tumi examines the area himself. He explains what he finds in plain language, including what he would not recommend, and offers the smaller option where one exists. You leave with a written quote and time to think. If nothing surgical is the honest answer, you will be told so.
