What are Ganglion Cysts?
Ganglion cysts are noncancerous lumps that most commonly develop along the tendons or joints of the wrists or hands. These cysts are filled with a jelly-like fluid and can vary in size. While ganglion cysts are usually harmless, they can sometimes cause discomfort or limit movement if they press on nearby nerves or tendons.
The Most Common Locations
- the top of the wrist
- the palm side of the wrist
- the base of the finger on the palm side
- the top of the end joint of the finger
Treatment Options
Non-surgical treatment options are often preferred. If the ganglion cyst is painless and does not interfere with activities, it may disappear on its own. However, if the cyst becomes painful or limits movement, various treatments are available. Splints and anti-inflammatory medications can help alleviate pain associated with activities. Alternatively, aspiration, a simple procedure performed in most office settings, involves draining the fluid from the cyst with a needle to decompress it. Although recurrence is common with aspiration, if non-surgical options fail or the cyst returns, surgical alternatives may be considered.
