Are lip fillers worth it in 2021? The hype surrounding lip augmentation was heightened around 2015 when reality T.V. star, Kylie Jenner, admitted to injecting her lips. Thousands of women were suddenly interested in plumping up their lips with filler. While the hype has died down, and Kylie has now had her fillers dissolved, getting lip fillers is still extremely popular. But are they worth it? We break down everything you need to know about lip fillers, below!

Why get lip filler?

Patients looking to get lip fillers may be concerned with the shape or fullness of their lips. Teenagers or young adults may be looking to keep up with current beauty trends by increasing the size of the pout. Older adults may find that the shape and fullness of their lips changed as they got older and they want to get their youthful look back. No matter the reason, lips fillers are an easy way to plump up the lips.

How do lip fillers work?

Lip fillers work by injecting collagen or hyaluronic acid-based filler into the lips with a needle. The needle is injected into both the upper and lower lips to ensure they are even. The filler increases the size and volume of the lips. Injectable hyaluronic acid is a type of temporary dermal filler and is the most commonly used type of filler for lip enhancement. It is a gel-like substance that is made from bacteria. When the filler is injected, it attaches itself to the water molecules in the skin and creates the appearance of thick and plump lips. Two of the most popular hyaluronic brands are Juvederm and Restylane. The amount of filler a patient receives will depend on her original lip size and the size she wishes to upgrade to. A plastic surgeon will typically start with one syringe (1 cc) of filler.

Is getting lip fillers safe?

The FDA has approved injectable hyaluronic acid for lip enhancement including brands such as Juvederm, Restylane, Captique, and Elevess. Collagen-based dermal fillers approved by the FDA include Artefill, Fibrel, Cosmoder. The best way to ensure your lip injections are safe is to get your lips filled by a board-certified plastic surgeon. The procedure is safe unless it is not done by a professional.  Generally, a patient will need to be 18-years-old. Minors may be able to get lip fillers with the permission of a parent. Please check with your doctor to ensure if getting lip fillers is right for you.

Does getting lip fillers hurt?

Before the filler is injected, your surgeon will numb your lips with a numbing cream or a local anesthetic to help ease the pain. Even with the pain medication, you may feel a slight pinch. The lips may temporarily swell and/or bruise following the procedure.

Although the name sounds harsh, hyaluronic acid is actually just a sugar molecule that is naturally found on the skin’s surface. Even still, some people may experience an allergic reaction to it. The allergic reaction may cause swelling and bruising that takes longer than usual to heal.

Is getting lip fillers worth it?

Getting lip filler is an easy way to get fuller, plump lips. Although their initial hype has died down, they are still a popular option for those looking to increase the size of their lips. One of the biggest advantages to lip fillers is that it is not permanent. So, if you decide you don’t want to continue, you don’t have to. Many of our patients have experienced great results with lip fillers. They can last up to a year, so you won’t have to continuously return to see results. A good plastic surgeon will make sure that your lips look natural on your face.

Forever Young BBL – Reprogram the Age of Your Skin

Send light energy deep into your cells to influence gene activity related to aging. The result is youthful, beautiful skin that is actually programmed to be younger! Stanford University researchers found that hundreds of genes involved with younger skin were activated, while those associated with aging were turned off.

This procedure can treat any area of your body, but most commonly the face, neck, and chest are treated. This non-invasive, gentle procedure allows you to return to normal immediately, with virtually no downtime. The number of treatments depends on your particular instance, but regular treatments, at least once a year, have been proven to actually stop the aging process!

Forever Clear BBL – Your Skin is in the Clear!

A revolutionary acne treatment like no other. No downtime, no drugs, and faster results. This treatment uses powerful light to comfortably and effectively clear acne with no creams or medications needed. Forever Clear BBL uses a 3-step process including blue and yellow Broad Band Light and infra-red light in rapid gentle pulses.

Your personalized plan will be developed with a physician, along with follow up treatments and skincare routines. A typical treatment can be as quick as 15 minutes, depending on the area. It takes just one treatment to start seeing improvement, but treatment time and frequency depend on the patient. It is non-invasive and generally does not require a topical anesthetic, but it all depends on your needs. There is typically no downtime and normal activities like wearing makeup can usually resume immediately after. An aftercare plan will be provided, and complete healing usually occurs one week after treatment. Get your skin in the clear with Forever Clear BBL!

Forever BARE BBL – Dare to be Forever Bare

Get beautifully bare skin with the Forever Clear BBL (Broad Band Light). This comfortable treatment has virtually no downtime, with typically faster and safer hair removal versus traditional treatments. This laser hair removal treatment uses pulsed light to deliver photothermal energy to hair follicles. Rapid, short pulses of this energy cause the hair follicles to stop producing hair, and this doesn’t harm the tissue surrounding the follicle.

BBL Treatment with Sciton Laser

This treatment targets hairs in the active growth phase. Not all your hair will be in the active growth stage at once, so multiple treatments are required to treat all the hair in the area. Any area of the body can be treated and most areas require 3 to 5 treatments at 4-6 week intervals. Your long-term results will depend on the hair’s thickness, area, and growth cycle. Aftercare is simple, with very little care needed. You may notice what seems like hair regrowth after a few days or weeks, but this is actually the hair being shed and it will not be growing back!

Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser – Regain That Competitive Edge

The Halo treatment targets skin damage and visible signs of aging like wrinkles, discolouration, sun damage and more. This combination treatment uses deep dermal revitalization with epidermal renewal. It targets the right depth for precise and effective results.

You can see results from this treatment just 2 to 5 days after your HALO treatment. However, your skin will continue to improve with time. Most patients see the best results after 2 to 3 weeks. You will work with your clinician to create a personalized plan of treatments. The treatment has minimal discomfort, but your clinician may use a topical ointment. After your treatment, you should keep your skin protected according to instructions, but afterwards, you can resume normal activities. After the first 24 hours, your skin will peel and continue to peel over the next few days. HALO results will last for years to come as long as you continue to protect your skin from UV damage. The Hybrid Fractional Laser uses advanced technology for comfortable and quick, effective results without downtime.

Young women aren’t the only ones interested in plastic surgery these days! The shame and guilt behind getting plastic surgery used to be high, but nowadays, enhancing your looks through surgery is common and even encouraged by many. Even still, some older generations may be still wary about the idea of getting cosmetic surgery. But there’s no need! As long as you are healthy and don’t have underlying conditions, surgery is still possible for those after 50. There are also many non-surgical aesthetic procedure options available.

For many people after 50, the goal is not to look vastly different. In fact, many seek to simply look like a younger version of themselves. For this reason, anti-ageing procedures are the most common. These procedures will tighten and lift the skin, and get rid of stubborn fat. If you’re still debating on whether or not you should book your consultation, here is information about the most common cosmetic surgery procedures for older adults:

5 Things To Do To Prepare For Plastic Surgery

1. Take Photos

First, your plastic surgeon will want a “before” photo of your body or face so he will be able to show off your amazing results. Trust us, you’ll want to document this process from beginning to end.

2. Stay Healthy

No matter what type of procedure you’ll be getting, you’ll want to make sure that your body is in tip-top shape. If you regularly smoke or drink alcohol, try cutting back or stopping altogether if you’re able to! Eating healthy meals and moderate exercise will also help your body to get in the best condition for your surgery. Getting healthy will help your body recover from your procedure by increasing blood flow and limiting fat.

It will also help scars become less noticeable. Your plastic surgeon and your body will thank you! For the best results, implement a healthy routine at least one week before your surgery date. Don’t be too rough on your body during this time! Completely revamping your workout routine can increase your chances of injuring yourself which could potentially delay your surgery.

3. Don’t Eat The Night Before

For most cosmetic surgeries, you won’t be allowed to eat or drink the night before and in the morning/day of your procedure. This protects you from complications that can occur from the anesthesia. Anesthesiologists refer to this guideline as NPO after midnight.

4. Bring a Mask

Plastic surgery is booming during the pandemic. To protect yourself and the plastic surgery clinic’s staff, you will need to wear a mask in the waiting room before the procedure. Check with your clinic to know if you’re able to bring a friend or family member with you in the waiting room or if they’ll need to wait outside.

5. Schedule Your Pick-Up

After a surgical procedure, your body will most likely be sore and the anesthesia will slowly wear off. You won’t be able to drive, walk, or use public transportation in many cases. Make sure that you arrange with a friend or family member a time to pick you up and stay with you for around 24 hours after the procedure. In some cases, you will need someone to monitor you, help you change your clothing, etc.

Your plastic surgery preparation will help ensure that you are ready to go on your surgery date. Barrie Plastic Surgery is open and ready to help you boost your self-confidence this year with our plastic surgery procedures! Our friendly staff will ensure you are informed and comfortable in each step of the process.
